Pécharmant
Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec
A small distinctive AOC, with good reds, surrounded by the Bergerac vineyards
France, Pécharmant, AOC, 2015
Introduction
Just north of the town of Bergerac Pécharmant is a small wine area of around 400 ha. It has been recognised since 1936 as an AOC. However, the Pécharmant wines have been around since the 11th century and are the oldest vineyards in the Bergerac region, but are hardly known beyond this region.
This red wine is produced under a private label by Unidor, which was founded in 1961. It is a Dordogne organisation (Union) of four cooperatives based in the wine commune of St. Laurent des Vignes, just south of the town of Bergerac. This is actually in the Monbazillac region. Unidor represents 400 members and produces 1/3 of Bergerac’s wines in their own facilities as well as doing their own storage and logistics.

Insights:
Pécharmant is usually made from 4 grapes, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec (locally called Cot). The wine must have at least 3 of these in the blend and each variety cannot exceed 65%. This one does not contain Cabernet Franc and underwent some oak aging.

Pech (=hill) and Charmant (=charming) make Pécharmant, ‘charming hill’. It is one of the explanations where the name comes from.
