Grand Cru Kirchberg de Ribeauvillé, Riesling at its best by Louis Sipp
France, Alsace, Grand Cru Kirchberg de Ribeauvillé, Riesling, Louis Sipp, 2009

Introduction
Provenance galore, first mentioned in 1328 and since 1975 recognised as a Grand Cru. Its position towards the sun, the soil, terroir, with the vines approximately 40 years old; all ideal for this Riesling, on the Kirchberg, ‘Church hill’, just north from the village Ribeauvillé, Haut-Rhin.

This Grand Cru is one of fifty-one fine wines in the Alsace wine region, naming the locality and the village, not mixing it up with Kirchberg-de-barr, another Alsace Grand Cru. Louis Sipp is based in Ribeauvillé, its winery in the main street of the village and started in the First World War and is currently still run by the family, since 1996 by Etienne and Martine Sipp.

Wine specifics
Ready to drink and can keep still for a while. Nice dry, expressive on fruity nose and taste, balanced, mineral tones. Serving with fish dishes, white meats, the whole meal and typical Alsace cuisine, such as Sauerkraut. Obtained in France, may be available in the UK. The label is trying to express, with the beige areas, the steep slopes and with the soil structures drawn at the bottom and the top of the label.
Insights:
This Grand Cru applies to 3 other grape varieties, being: pinot gris, gewürztraminer and muscat. The mountain is shared with other producers, such as Jean Sipp and Kientzler. Louis Sipp is a forerunner in organic farming. Alsace primarily produces white wines and most wines are single variety ones, with Riesling and Gewürztraminer being the main ones. There are 3 AOC’s for Alsace wines, Alsace AOC, Alsace Grand Cru AOC and Crémant d’Alsace AOC.
