Falanghina del Sannio
Falanghina
Falanghina is the white grape and Sannio is the region in southern Italy
Italy, Sannio, Janare, Falanghina del Sannio, DOC-DOP, 2015

Introduction
A white made by La Guardiense, which was started as a cooperative in 1960 with 33 members, now ca. 1000, all farming around the town of La Guardia Sanframondi, near Benevento. This area is in the centre of the Sannio wine region, part of Campania, just north east of the town of Napoli. Janare is the name of a range of wines by the Coop, all produced and bottled by them. The Janare name means friendly witch; a tribute to an old and popular tale the region was once known for and they try to keep ‘alive’.

As a wine the Janare range stands for the use of native grape varieties, such as this one, 100% falanghina. Other varieties are fiano, greco and aglianico. The winery produces whites, reds and sparkling. The three ranges are Janare, Fremondo and Classico, all coming from the 1500 ha. of vineyards. La Guardiense is one the biggest coop’s in Italy, officially called Cantina Sociale La Guardiense. The ageing of this white wine is in the stainless tanks, maintaining the original characteristics.

Insights:
This wine is a DOC, not a DOCQ (there are 74), which is step up from the DOC (there are 334); to Italian standards. DOP, ‘Denominazione d’Origine Protetta’, is a grading by European Law and covers them both (408), on equal standing. IGP is the next step down (118), with Vino for the remainder. 95% of the Falanghina grapes in Italy are grown in Campania and then 80% within Sannio.
