Méthode Traditionelle, from Alsace, a lovely sparkling wine
France, Alsace, Crémant d’Alsace, Brut, AOC, Cuvée Réserve, NV

Introduction
Crémant d’Alsace is an Appellation Origine Controlée for sparkling wines made in the Alsace region in France. The production originally started in 1900 and the AOC was set in 1976, with the Crémant name further regulated in 1996 by the European Parliament. This one is produced in the area around the village of Bennwihr.

Crémant stands for sparkling wines made in France’s regions, by the Champagne way of fermentation in the bottle (méthode traditionelle), but as they are not from the Champagne region, they cannot be called Champagne. The Crémants have their own AOC, such as Bourgogne and Loire and they may use different grape varieties than Champagne itself.

Insights:
Alsace AOC allows the following grape varietals: riesling, pinot blanc, pinot noir, pinot gris, auxerrois blanc and chardonnay, all grown in the Alsace region. For rosé, only pinot noir is allowed. Most of the crémants are from the colourful Alsatian villages of Barr, Bennwihr, Eguisheim, Riquewihr, Wintzenheim and Andolsheim. From a onetime small production, it has grown into a multi-million production of bottles of sparkling wines, in Alsace and the other French regions.
