Côtes de Gascogne
Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc
South-west France region and with, for its region, a typical crisp white, IGP or Vin de Pays
France, Côtes de Gascogne, Belles Vignes Collection, Colombard-Sauvignon Blanc, IGP, 2015

Introduction
South-west France region and with, for its region, a typical crisp white, IGP or Vin de Pays. The Gascony wine region mainly produces white wines and stretches throughout the department of Gers. The classification of Côtes de Gascogne is for the Vin de Pays (also called IGP), a step up from the Vin de Table and specifically for wine produced in the Armagnac region and has been in use since 1982. This wine is produced by the large wine firm Grand Chais de France, bottled in this case in Landiras, south of the town of Bordeaux and are based in Petersbach, just north of the Alsace region in north eastern France.

GCF is linked to JP Chenet, a well known brand and among the best selling French wines in the world, as well representing many other French wine regions, such as Gascony. In Gascony the association of producers of Vin de Pays Côtes de Gascogne have set various standards for this wine and has a great and strict following among the regional growers, many of which fall under various cooperatives. A very small proportion of the production is red or rosé.

Insights:
Apart from the mentioned cooperatives, there are some independent producers. The Belles Vignes Collection (‘beautiful vines/vineyards collection’) holds various recognisable and accessible French wine types, with either the region or grape varieties as its basis, bringing the individual characters to the forefront. Reds are much more produced in the areas surrounding Gascogny, such as Madiran, Buzet, Fronton and, further away, Cahors. In the Armagnac region increasingly grapes, traditionally used to make the brandy type, are utilised for making the in popularity growing region’s crisp white wines.
