Bergerac
Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot
Bergerac AOC, Dordogne in France, what is there not to like
France, Bergerac, La Cave d’Augustin Florent, Bergerac AOC, 2016
Introduction
A popular tourist region for many, whilst not referring to the television series either. The AOC has 1200 growers, 93 communes and is just east from the Bordeaux wine region. Bordeaux came first and in the years to follow the vineyards extended into the Dordogne, helped by having a number of rivers (incl. for trade purposes), such as the Dordogne River. The AOC is centred around the town of Bergerac.
This wine is bottled by Maison Johanès Bourbée, in Beychac-et-Caillau, half way between the towns of Libourne and Bordeaux and is linked since 1999 to supermarket chain Carrefour. Under the name of La Cave d’Augustin Florent this brand covers a range of French regional wines, wanting to ensure quality and regional specific and representative characters of each wine. Only a small proportion of Bergerac AOC is exported, not uncommon for many of the French, often smaller, regions.

Insights:
The more distinguished reds are usually marketed under the Cotes de Bergerac AOC. They can also store a few years longer. Bergerac white is worth trying. In the Dordogne area the Bergerac wine region is mixed in with others, some more known than others, such as Pécharmant, Monbazillac and Saussignac. The latter two are known for their fine sweet dessert wines. Bergerac is seen at times as a lesser version of a Bordeaux, but it won’t apply to all of them.
