Laudun
Syrah, Grenache
One of the 17 Rhône Villages AOC’s with a good red, as you do so often with the Villages wines
France, Rhône, Laudun, Côtes du Rhône Villages, AOC, 2015
Introduction
Laudun has been a wine area for a long time and was among the first five that were given the AOC status of Côtes du Rhône Villages. Some went beyond that later, such as Gigondas, who do not have to make anymore reference to the Côtes du Rhône Villages naming, but just the name of the village. The Villages wines are considered very good value and quality. The history of Laudun shows more links to white than red wine. The Laudun reds are based on Syrah and Grenache.
This Laudun is bottled by Laudun Chusclan Vignerons, based in Chusclan and, under private label,
is linked to supermarket chain Carrefour. The two wineries got united in 2008 after economic setbacks, with Laudun Vignerons having been around since 1925 and Chusclan since 1933. They now represent 250 wine growing families and both regions have been on an environmentally friendly growing approach since 1998. Chusclan itself is a Côtes du Rhône Villages AOC.

Insights:
Near the village of Laudun is the Camp de Cesar plateau, reminding the area of its very strong links to the Romans and remnants have been found of wine making dating back to that period. Under the name of La Cave d’Augustin Florent this brand covers a range of French regional wines wanting to ensure quality and regional specific and representative characters of each wine. Laudun, as well as nearby Chusclan, make good rose’s. The winery also has allocated a small plot for organically wine growing.
