Etna Rosso DOC
Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio
Lenza di Munti, red wine from the volcanic soil of Mount Etna on Sicily
Italy, Sicily, Etna Rosso DOC, Lenza di Munti, Nicosia, 2013

Introduction
Cantine Nicosia is the producer, established in 1898 and now in its fifth generation of the Nicosia family. The Monte Gorna vineyard is near the town of Trecastagni, at an altitude of 700-750 meters, with the volcano in the background to the north. The DOC area is on the north, east and south slopes of the volcano and was established in 1968.

Cantine Nicosia’s wines are all produced on site and it is a modern operation, respecting traditions, operating organic where possible and is certified for this. The Lenza di Munti is part of their classic range, with a white as well and the front label expressing the altitude of the vines, at 720 metres. Nicosia is now also cultivating wines in the Vittoria region, further to the south, near the coast.

Wine specifics
Ready to drink and can keep still for a little while. Smooth, well balanced, fruity, ‘minerally’, hints of herbs/floral, spices. Serving red meats, grills, cold meat platters, ‘meaty’ pastas, mature cheeses. The grapes are Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. Obtained in the UK. Cork. Part of the Nicosia logo shows a man on a mule and the barrels, part of a gone era of wine trading.
Insights:
The harvest is usually mid-end of October, with ageing initially in stainless steel vats, followed by 3-4 months in oak barrels and 6 months in the bottle. Whilst Sicily is most known for its Nero d’Avola grape (apart from the fortified Marsala wine), the wine industry on the island has improved a lot over the years, Etna not being an exception. The Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio variety are typical for the Etna slopes.
