Nespolino
Sangiovese, Merlot
Sangiovese blend, Romagna, Rubicone, by a good winemaker: Nespolino
Italy, Rubicone, Nespolino, Sangiovese & Merlot, Rubicone IGT, 2014

Introduction
Poderi dal Nespoli, founded in 1929, is the Italian winery, with a Sangiovese - Merlot blend, from the Rubicone wine area, known for its ‘meaty’ Sangiovese. The area is just north west of San Marino, based in the Bidente Valley, with its own micro climate and originated in the village Nespoli, with Atillio Ravaioli planting the first vines. The current wine maker, Scipione Giuliani, is responsible for this version.

The area is considered part of Central Italy and very much Sangiovese country, ideal conditions, with the Apennine Mountains playing a major role; in this case the winery is on the eastern side of the mountain range. The award winning winery has an extensive wine range. The reds are mostly Sangiovese based, whilst the white section is very varied, with grapes such as Trebbiano, Famoso, Chardonnay and Albana, to mention a few.

Insights:
The Martini family manages the winery, together with the 3rd and 4th generation of the Ravaioli family, combining the extensive wine knowledge with the international marketing of their wines. The merlot for this red wine has been aged in American oak barriques for 4 months, adding to the soft characteristics of this wine. They say about their wine: ‘Our wine is the spirit of Romagna’. IGT – Indicazione Geografica Tipica – gives confirmation on the region of origin, usually good quality, but do not classify under an often even stricter DOC or DOCQ.
