Vinsobres
Grenache, Syrah
A former ‘Villages’, now a Rhône Cru since 2006
France, Rhône, Crus des Côte du Rhône, Vinsobres, AOC, Cellier des Dauphins, Signature, 2014
Introduction
Formerly Côtes du Rhône Villages Vinsobres AOC and now Crus des Côtes du Rhône Vinsobres AOC. The wine must contain at least 50% Grenache and 25% Syrah and/or Mourvèdre, with the vineyards around the village of Vinsobres, 35 kilometres north east from Orange, southern Rhône. Under its new label, the wine is on the move.
This Vinsobres is produced by Cellier des Dauphins, a French cooperative group of 13 cooperative wine cellars from the Southern Rhône valley. Started in 1963 with 6 cellars and is also known as ‘Union des Vignerons des Côtes du Rhône’ and is based in Tulette with their head office and bottling plant, representing 3000 growers. Many of their other ‘Dauphons’ wines are bottled in their particular shaped bottle, which is part of the brand.

Insights:
The Vinsobres has been matured in French oak barrels for several months. The cooperative produces 6 wines under the awards winning Signature label, using selected wine parcels and trying an even higher level of finesse. Another Signature is for instance Plan de Dieu, a red Côte du Rhône Villages. Cellier des Dauphins is the largest wine maker in the Rhône region. Dauphin officially means dolphin and is represented in the coat of arms of the Dauphin of France, a onetime heir to throne in France. A link or 'just' a name?
